Kristen has a Bachelor's Degree in Fashion Design from Massey University Wellington and experience working with Fashion Designer, Robyn Mathieson. Kristen has an interest in all disciplines of design and her skills in Adobe Creative Cloud are a valuable addition to the team. Kristen and her husband own a construction company and often have renovation projects of their own on the go. The Wellington office was established in 1985, Sydney office in 2000 and Brisbane office in 2020. During this time Jonathan has steered the company through major changes in the industry continually building upon the company’s distinctive multi- disciplined team approach. His business experience has seen him operate through Australasia, Asia and the USA, together with directing hundreds of projects. He has received numerous design awards for workplace, retail, residential and product design. In the early 1990s Jonathan was seconded by Colliers International to help establish the Corporate Services Division in Wellington, where he instigated numerous property deals and developments. With his corporate property experience and facility knowledge, Jonathan has developed a strategic overview of property and workspace practices, becoming a ‘sounding board’ for many of our clients during property assessment and acquisition. Jonathan became a Fellow of the Designers’ Institute of New Zealand in 1990 following his lead role in the formation of DINZ. He carried on to serve on the council for 5 years. In 2004, Jonathan was appointed to the newly established Government Design Leadership Group and sat on the Better by Design Board within New Zealand Trade & Enterprise until early 2011. In addition to her 4 year Interior Design Degree, she has studied and worked in a range of related fields. Following her graduation, she worked for SSDG, one of one Vancouver’s top Interior Design firms, where she quickly progressed within the project design team. She also took on initiatives such as developing their CAD protocols and presentation capabilities. During her time at Custance, Laura has established herself as a project designer. She works pro-actively, contributing to all stages of the design process, including client interface. She has a holistic appreciation for a range of design disciplines and their contribution to a successful solution. In addition to spatial and graphic design skills, Laura has Revit and 3D modelling expertise, and works in close collaboration with the documentation team to bring conceptual ideas to life in practical and cost-effective ways. She is involved throughout the design process and is responsible for the evaluation, costing and specification of all material finishes and furniture. As a director of the company she has participated in and contributed to almost all aspects of the business, both at a detailed hands-on level and at a highly strategic level. Their tight knit culture is reflected in the new layout, where office hierarchy is minimised with a central open plan work space and transparent office pods. A previously isolated reception is now at the heart of the space and panoramic views of the city are enjoyed throughout. Upon entry, a green logo wall guides guests to a circular reception hub surrounded by boardrooms, meeting rooms and a café. Large sliding doors allow the whole space to be opened up for events or closed for desired functions. Skylights and light features highlight a simple and direct circulation, while clear site lines are carried throughout the office. A play of transparency through vertical elements provide both openness and privacy. Their new Wellington office moved from Level 9 to 13 within the building that housed their establishing offices 12 years ago. The new space was to reflect their vibrant, tight-knit office culture, while opening up the work environment and maximising waterfront views. With the addition of staff, meeting rooms and function space as well as a transition to open plan working , the illusion of space was the primary challenge. Despite a high density floor plate and low ceilings, a sense of height and volume is achieved by a holistic, 3-dimensional ‘carving’ of space. Sculptural forms frame the reception pod, opening up towards the view. Overhead, a white plane rakes upward, lifting into the black acoustic ceiling that connects all communal spaces. Showcasing these businesses was an important aspect of their brief to Custance when creating their new facility in the Aon Centre, 1 Willis Street. It was also important that the new offices have a New Zealand vibe, be smart and professional but also modest. An angled shelving unit in the lobby offers flexible display for companies that Booster support whilst also providing screening to the adjacent conference room. The lobby opens up to a generous café and gathering space, whilst the open plan office space wraps around the remaining three sides of the building and consists of a variety of seating, desking, meeting rooms and call centre to suit their different work modes. Given the nature of their consulting leadership roles, the design had to showcase future workplace and organisational behaviour, while incorporating leading edge ‘interactive’ technology. Varying levels of security throughout the office was required, as well as flexible meeting and project spaces. A casual, yet sophisticated entry café greets guests who can alert staff of their arrival through a video doorbell. Secure, glass doors lead into the main office area where flexible meeting & project rooms, library and café line the external glazing. A central open work space features a ‘collaboration spine’, linking utility spaces, and leading to the acoustic, ‘hooded’ Quiet & Build Room pods. Various working styles are accommodated, while working walls are in close proximity. The apartments required a complete refurbishment as part of the building earthquake strengthening. Considerable interventions relating to re-strengthening, acoustic and fire rating upgrades, and new services were all accommodated seamlessly within the design. Significant improvements to the apartments were achieved with minimal change to the existing layouts, including creating access to a roof area that provides large rooftop terraces for 2 apartments; improved relationships between spaces and additional bedrooms and bathrooms. The new office links 2 buildings, forming an L-shape, each space with distinctive characteristics. The new design sought to respond to and align with their start-up culture and brand identity, while highlighting and unifying the space within each building. The office entry and front of house facility retains historic building features while providing a variety of flexible spaces for meetings and collaboration/workshop sessions with a high level ICT capability. A work area with 12 hot desks, build room, kitchen and break out space sits within the new building portion. The ‘Social Kitchen’ sits at the heart of the space, featuring a timber louvre ceiling and natural light filtering from two large funnels in the ceiling. The kitchen provides a setting for F&P’s engineers and designers to engage with their products on a daily basis. Custance developed a modular pod system with fully illuminated ceilings and writable/magnetic design walls. Additional lightwells bring a spread of natural light throughout the floor which also supports large trees and extensive planting. The Social Kitchen is symbolically placed at the office core and is a site of sociability, collaboration, creativity and eating together. The sweeping, curved plywood ceiling floats above, giving this space a more residential, intimate feel, which feels appropriate as a backdrop for home appliances. F&P is interested in the lives lived around their products, and the best way to bring this touch point into the workplace is a usable kitchen where staff can use the products daily. Meeting pods border the Social Kitchen, providing a natural destination for staff and visitors. The concept of Navigation was embraced as the central narrative. It informed the planning, design and detail for the project, assisting the team to realise both practical and aspirational elements of the brief. This included the sense of arrival into the space, cues for orientation within, and how the spaces bring together Deloitte’s people, clients, and community to chart new courses toward an innovative future. Its wedge shape anchors the circular reception point. From here, a personalised, concierge style greeting welcomes clients and visitors into a Koru style lounge which is serviced by a refreshments/ coffee bar recessed within the wedge. Opposite, the korowai wall represents a woven cloak. It features a tāniko/ border referencing Auckland’s many volcanos. Kaitaku, a highly prized korowai speaks to arataki – a Deloitte NZ value, to lead the way. The design creates a see-through meeting space island to both the central area and southern perimeter. Two main pod blocks create the central entry to each work floor A base palette of natural materials and neutral tones are common throughout with each of the six floors subtly informed by a different Tāmaki Makaurau quality or landscape. A central stair provides connection between the floors. Level 20 is designed to facilitate a variety of meetings and gatherings in size, style and tradition. However, with a lease expiry option in 8 months, the programme allowed half the usual time. Minimising fixed build not only supported a shorter construction time but also facilitated the overarching requirements of the brief to pilot Datacom’s NoW mindsets – a strategy for future working and the integration of technology and space. The project team bought together broad experience and know-how focused on the future of working to drive maximum adaptability. The Level 12 lounge area adjacent to the board and meeting rooms offers a range of informal meeting and work spaces for Datacom staff and clients to engage and relax in. Situated at One Whitmore Street, in the heart of Wellington's waterfront, the 15-storey BNZ building spans an entire city block. It is one of New Zealand’s most seismically advanced developments and is designed to achieve a 5-Star Green Star rating for sustainability—both key factors in the firm’s decision to relocate. The brief called for a contemporary yet timeless design offering premium quality with depth underpinning a warm and welcoming professional environment reflecting Minter Ellison people and the community. This included a democratic approach to collaboration for staff and a fully mobile working environment, with a “lift and go” philosophy. High levels of acoustic performance were required throughout, providing private and confidential client meeting spaces and a place to host staff and clients, maximising the unique position of the office. Custance collaborated with Athfield Architecture to design a carefully crafted and curated workspace. Perforated aluminium wraps the utility block becoming an undulating translucent skin through the work zone. Set behind the undulating barrel forms area set of jump rooms. Reception and meeting spaces are arranged along the Balance Street face looking towards the city; the open plan work zone faces onto Whitmore Street with views to the harbour and Tinakori hills. In the nose of the building, a working lounge links both spaces providing a place for coming together for work, socialising or relaxing. Upon arrival, the full length of the house presents a fortress-like façade with high precast concrete and river stone walls punctuated by narrow windows. The interior opens up to reveal elevated views overlooking the River and Tararua Ranges beyond. A strong East to West axis orders the house, expressed with a simple spine from which a series of skillion roofs flutter above the ridge line. Wide steps down to a breezeway continue the spine through a separate shearers quarters and equipment shed block. Living and bedroom spaces open off the gallery to the North with bathrooms, laundry and garage to the South. An in situ concrete wall featuring an embossed ‘piano key’ pattern defines the gallery axis. Materials are honest and robust in response to the site’s rural context. Koinga House - Set on a dramatic vineyard site in Central Otago, this new 375m2 home provides a spectacular outlook across Mt. Koinga. Traditional forms are combined with contemporary detailing. Two stone-clad wings form the main vertical elements of the house, and are connected by a copper-clad, central body that houses the master suite, two guest bedrooms and a bathroom. Hallways between the structures are more intimate with low ceilings providing a pleasing contrast to the openness of the high raked ceilings within the living spaces and bedrooms. A basement cellar is located below the entrance gallery. An honest and robust palette of natural materials are used throughout. Copper cladding and traditional Central Otago Schist flow from exterior to interior articulating form and providing cohesive simplicity. Careful design was key to ensuring that the exterior of the building unified the new structure above, while respecting the existing heritage building below. The resulting structure and mass provided the building with a strong presence to the street. With a thin, north facing façade, thermally efficient spaces were a natural outcome, and the resulting 28 apartments are warm, quiet, and highly sought after. Living rooms span the full depth of the building, with glazed walls to decks front and back, allowing through ventilation, with interiors crisply modern, and completely open plan to maximise internal space. The redevelopment involved converting 4 apartments into 2 luxury apartments with the addition of a third apartment at roof level. While significant remodeling work was undertaken, maintaining and respecting the façade and general nature of the building was a key consideration. The additions are treated in a refined, minimal fashion using contemporary materials to achieve a contrasting yet sympathetic result. In keeping with the period of the building, a simple layout of large interconnecting rooms off a central gallery was employed to provide a generosity of space and elegant proportions. Cantilevered platforms are poised over a swimming pool, and all rooms take advantage of the spectacular views.
